The challenge

The Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine Development and Innovation Agency (ADI) asks us to think about improving how the Tourisme Lab supports its start-ups. The ideal chance to run a playful needs-elicitation workshop using the UX Devil methodology!

Preparing the workshop

We first gather the elements needed to prepare the workshop and the supporting materials. The useful information is varied in nature. We look at participants’ profiles as well as at the different phases of the experience with the Tourisme Lab. The purely organisational and logistical aspects are also taken into account in order to make the workshop run as smoothly as possible.

The supporting materials are designed to make group ideation easier and to be easy to use in the space made available for the workshop. The workshop “kit” provided to each group is made up of:

  • an instruction sheet (to complement our facilitation)
  • two brainstorming boards corresponding to the 4 phases of the Tourisme Lab experience (“young shoots” phase, “small shrubs” phase, “shrubs” phase, “oaks” phase)
  • a set of UX Devil cards for the brainstorming (free download on our dedicated site 😈)
  • “voting” cards for the final prioritisation

And finally a large board to collectively reconstruct the overall experience across all the phases of the workshop.

First part of the workshop: ideation and debate

For each phase of the Tourisme Lab experience, participants list the worst experiences possible for the incubator’s start-ups using the UX Devil cards, first individually, then as a group. For each idea kept, they then look for solutions to address the constraints imagined.

Participants quickly identify problems tied to the support, the difficulty of making connections or targeting certain areas of expertise. These constraints fuel the debates to land on concrete solution directions: putting in place a back-planning schedule, expert coaching, bringing more transparency, and so on.

Second part of the workshop: voting and prioritisation

After pooling and discussing the proposals, each group uses the voting cards available to them to select the best solutions, indicate the ones that deserve to be re-discussed, and those that warrant alerts. This step gives us, right at the end of the workshop, a synthetic and prioritised view of the solutions to implement to improve the Tourisme Lab experience.
