UX writing

Concept

Adapting to the user's emotions

UX writing covers everything to do with writing the functional texts of an interface. It can be button labels, error messages, empty states, tooltips and many others. The goal of UX writing is to guide the user at every step of their journey.

UX writing shouldn't be confused with copywriting, which has persuasion more as its objective. UX writing, for its part, must adapt to the user's emotions to support the journey. UX writing, when done well, helps reduce friction. The tone used plays an important role in UX writing, because the same words can either humiliate or reassure depending on the context. For an error message, and depending on the context, you'll need to be either instructive, or reassuring, or, on the contrary, direct depending on the desired objective.

UX writing is often forgotten during design, with the all-too-systematic use of Lorem ipsum. Yet it's a significant part of the user experience. Some screens, like empty states, are actually great playgrounds for having fun with words. Test it yourself by heading to our 404 page and you won't be disappointed.
