Cognitive science and UX?

The idea of this talk was to share a look back at what we’ve been able to test, tinker with, succeed at or fail at. In short, a kind of digest, to share with as many people as possible. The aim was to learn from others and be inspired together, and also to make cognitive science better known.

In less than an hour, the exercise is fairly tricky. So we had to keep the structure simple. First, an opening section sets out the challenges of more human design. Which situations, interfaces or devices around us are worth questioning? Part of the answer is in the presentation. :)

Then, we wanted to give an overview of what cognitive science teaches us. A broad goal. We had to make choices, and we focused on what felt essential at the very least: perception, attention and the cognitive processing of the world around us. We therefore (re)introduced the various core frameworks that we feel are worth mentioning.

Finally, after the theory, time to put things into practice. For that, what could be better than sharing tools and methods we put in place during client projects? Just one rule: no rules. We only made sure we had the broadest complementarity between the fields shown and the approaches put in place.

The slides to download

As promised, and after some clean-up, the presentation is finally available online. For the links included in it to work properly, the best thing is to download the PDF from our SlideShare (opens in new window).

You can also browse it here at your own pace. ;)

The video of the online talk

After running this talk in Lausanne, we had the chance to do it again in Lyon. This time, in partnership with the Sketch Meetup Lyon team, in front of an even bigger audience. At that point, we weren’t in lockdown yet, but several requests gave us the idea to team up again with the Lyon crew and switch to a YouTube live teleconference format.

A slightly disorienting experience, but a very interesting one. It also helps make sharing easier in the era of social distancing.

The video of the talk is available on YouTube (opens in new window) and we embed it just below. After all, we’re pretty comfortable here, right?

More cognitive science in design?

Those who follow the blog and/or know us already know: we love discovering, sharing, sparking curiosity and trying new things. So we invite you to take a look at other articles on the blog, such as the one on the creative brain or this other one on affordance.

In any case, stay curious, and we look forward to your comments, feedback and questions.
